Twenty seven cinematic characters representing four multigenerational families served as the subjects. A cinematic corpus of four films was developed using a criteria-based sampling process. Supplementary research approaches that this study was based upon were: grounded theory, thick description, and interpretive phenomenology. The constructivist research paradigm linked theory to methodology using an observation-based research process, emphasizing observations as data collection methods. This psychological inquiry applied an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating: philosophy, social science, cinema studies, and research, and was based on a qualitative research paradigm. To the best of my knowledge, no other study has been conducted that based its operational definitions on these theories. These theoretical backgrounds laid the foundation to explore the relationships between levels of differentiation of self and parenting styles. Baumrind's parenting typology was used to assess authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and rejecting-neglecting parenting styles across dimensions. Bowen's concept of differentiation of self was used to evaluate personality profiles, assigning descriptive aspects to emotional maturity and emotional dependency. This study, therefore, explores how parents' personality profiles, evaluated through levels of differentiation of self, affect their parenting styles. While much research focuses on the effects of parental sociocultural, economic, and educational background on parenting behaviors, little research attention has been given to the intrinsic factors that contribute to individual differences in parental behavior. Parental attitudes and practices enormously affect children's cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral developmental outcomes, and their physical health and wellbeing. Finally, ATLAS.ti was used to create hyperlinked maps of quotations which assisted with the analysis of proposition three of this dissertation.īackground. ATLAS.ti allows co-occurring codes to be retrieved and visualized through network and mapping tools. Also useful at this stage for identifying patterns in the data was mapping of co-occurring codes. Concepts, themes, and patterns emerged from the network diagrams. These network diagrams were qualitative visual representations of the data and greatly assisted with third stage coding. ATLAS.ti provided the ability to make chains of multiple codes and linking of quotations to create networks, which was vital to third stage coding. ATLAS.ti assisted with using meta-ethnography as the means of synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative research. The use of ATLAS.ti for coding encouraged a cyclical and iterative approach to data analysis that would have been difficult to accomplish through note cards, word processing, or spreadsheet applications. Studies were imported to ATLAS.ti for first, second and third stage analysis which led to the creation of final themes and concepts. The author used ATLAS.ti to conduct a systematic review of the literature on leadership competencies in fields undergoing rapid change to complete his dissertation.
